Description
Imagine a world beneath the forest floor, where trees aren’t just standing still but dancing with one another, connected by an underground network of roots and mycelium. This idea, explored in Peter Wohlleben’s book The Hidden Life of Trees, inspired my latest painting, “The Song of Trees.” This is the 2nd in the series of paintings I am creating inspired by the book.
In the book, Wohlleben reveals that trees aren’t just silent giants; they talk, warn each other, and protect their community. They can even identify pests by taste and make their leaves bitter to deter herbivores. And when danger looms, they send signals through the air and the ground—a network Wohlleben calls the “wood wide web,” connecting even with their competitors.
It’s a world where cooperation takes center stage, not competition. And it raises a powerful question: What if we, too, recognized the depth of our connections—to nature, to each other?
The song of the trees invites us to listen and reflect. Are we silent, or are we part of the dance?
